Today (21 April 2012), Hampshire Judo held the first of the local participation events at the AWE RecSoc building in Aldermarston.

Children from a variety of clubs and schools took part in this small friendly event. More than 30 children fought in round robin pools under the watchful eyes of IJF referee Andy Tremlett. Andy also supervised the debut refereeing appearance of Ellie Stephens, who recently passed her junior refereeing award.

The event is part of a series of local competitions that Hampshire Judo is putting on as part of Hampshire County Council’s “Hampshire Games”.

“We wanted to extend the Hampshire Games beyond the main event in Aldershot on June 16th” said organisers “participants in the June event have to have participated in a local authority area event. This is something we (Hampshire Judo) implemented last year to provide local competition opportunities for novice child players. ”

Hampshire Judo would like to thank all the patents who supported their children today. We would also like to thank local organisers Paul Hamilton, Lynn Stringer and volunteers Andy Tremlett and Steve Lansley.

Contact your club coach for information on when your local authority area event is scheduled.

For more information or to volunteer, please contact Hampshire Games Organiser Lance Wicks ( lw@judocoach.com ).

On Saturday 31 March, the first trial event for the new Hampshire Judo Team Championships took place at St Marys Leisure Centre, Southampton.

The hosts Southampton Solent University provided the hall, mats and scoreboard and operator. The visiting teams brought their first aiders and referees.

Being the first event informal teams were formed on the day between players from clubs across Hampshire. 3 teams of 5 players were formed. Each comprising 4 males and 1 female.

After the fighting had finished, all participants, coaches and officials sat and shared their thoughts on the day and the Hampshire Team Championships project generally. There were good conversations and ideas shared.

There will be two more test events (April and May), with the full event starting in October.

The goal is to increase participation opportunities and participation levels for 12-16 year old and senior players in Hampshire. Whilst also growing the number of officials in the county.

Results:
1. Winchester Kings
2. Summit & AWE
3. Team Solent Rhinos.

(Please note these were informally formed teams with players from other clubs participating in these teams. For example Fleming Park, Eastleigh Judokwai and Winchester University).

For more information please contact Lance Wicks ( lw@judocoach.com).

I have worked for the BJA since February 2010 and covered the whole of the South East until January 2012, now I work in Hampshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire & Oxfordshire.

My primary job role is to increase the number of judo players in our 14+ age group. As a result the University sector has been a large area of work. In Hampshire alone over the last two years we have started clubs from scratch at The University of Winchester & Southampton Solent University with the Portsmouth University Judo Club imminent. Continuing down the 14+ agenda I have brought in external funding (Sportivate) to run 8 week beginner courses at some Schools & Colleges in the county looking to get judo out there more & more young people into the clubs.

I also work with clubs looking to develop using Clubmark accreditation. This comprises of the fulfilment of minimum operating standards such as having a Child Welfare Officer who has attended relevant courses and having a development plan in place. It is a nationally recognised kite mark across all sports and Hampshire judo currently has just five of these clubs. Furthering this I also work with clubs looking to secure funding from Sport England. During my time in post I have brought in over £30,000 of external investment into projects & clubs across the South East. In addition recently I have supported Simon Lee in securing a Hampshire County Council Grant for the Hants Team Championships which I also worked with Lance on at its inception.

I also work with Sport Hampshire & IOW to ensure judo is well represented and supported locally as well as working with the Hampshire Committee. Furthermore, I line manage a full time schools coach in Kent & am the national lead for the Summer of Sport, looking at how we can get the best out of the Olympics for judo.

If you would like to get in touch & are interested in any of the above my details are below:
