Clubs please vote at the Southern Area Judo AGM

The British Judo Association Southern Area is holding it’s Annual General Meeting on 8th July.

Derek Hopkins, Hampshire County Squad Coach from Gosport is standing for Election as Chair of the Southern Area. See below for a note from Derek explaining why he is standing for this post.

In Judo at the moment we are suffering from a plague, it is called apathy. We also have a core committee that is ageing and no one seems to want to take up the challenge to help this Area.

A few years ago I came across a quotation from Theodore Roosevelt:
“It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.”

We have many people who are critics, but do nothing to change what is, they do not turn up to AGM’s to make their voices heard, I want to take up the challenge and not be a cold and timid soul and try to help get the Southern Area where it belongs at the forefront of British Judo. I will require help, no one person can do it by themselves, I am also not so stupid as to throw out those who have the experience I do not have and wish to have their council.

Why am I Standing?

New Blood:
The committee has had no new members for many years. That is not to say that their commitment or contribution should be overlooked, their knowledge and experience is still required. I am committed to JUDO

Different Approach:
I want people to tell me what they want. I will then try to fulfil their request and if not tell them why not. It is also well known that I am frank with my views so I will give as good as I get.
Bring Judoka Together:
Coaches, Referees and Officials to regularly meet to discuss their problems and to educate each other. We also need to get coaches to understand the requirements of the National

Performance program.
This is not about Gold medals at 8 years old it is about Gold medals at the Olympics
Get the Most from the BJA for the Area:

The Area needs to drive the BJA’s resources where we believe they are required not to rely on the BJA to direct them. We need to better coordinate the efforts of the Technical Officers and Development Officer and get the BJA to inform us of any new areas of direction they are being asked to look at.

I have been practicing for 47 years and hold a 6th Dan, 2 x British Masters Champion, European Masters Silver Medallist, IJF World Masters Silver Medallist, 4x World Masters JA Silver Medallist. Technical Dan Grade Assessor, Member of National
Promotions Commission, Excell Coach,Hampshire Coach Coordinator and Squad Manager
